Allocate Work Order Components

Overview

Allocating work order components is the second step in the work order process. It is an optional step, as you do not need to allocate components. You may have setup the Production module to automatically allocate components.

Detail

PRD > Work Order Fabrication > Allocate Components

It is possible to allocate a work order more than once. This is allowed, as you may wish to partially allocate large work orders in order to keep from tying up component inventory. This also allows you to possibly over allocate the components. The Quantity to allocate field will turn red if you are over allocating that component. Some production environments over allocate components, as it might be customary to require one or two more of a particular component than is usually specified on a work order. This usually points to a need to modify the bill of material.
The decision to allocate components and when to allocate them is a critical one. Once components are allocated they are removed from the available inventory. Sales orders for component parts will have less availability and purchase requirements will show the need for more inventory. It is not necessary to allocate work order components. If they are allocated, they will be de-allocated when the components are released from inventory.

Allocate Work Order Components from the Work Order Fabrication submenu of the PRD menu.

  • Date – This is the date of the allocations This date will show up in the inventory transaction history of the item. You may leave it blank and it will default to the current date.

  • Work Order – This is the work order number to be allocated. The work order and its components will be displayed. It will also automatically choose to allocate the portion of the work order that has yet to be allocated.

  • Quantity to Allocate - If you over allocate a component, that field will turn red to alert you to the over allocation.

Click on the Allocate button in the toolbar (lightning Bolt). You will be prompted to make sure you wish to allocate the components. If any component is being over allocated, a red message appears to confirm you wish to over allocate.

If you decide to not allocate the components, click on No then exit the Allocate Components screen by clicking on the Exit button on the toolbar.

  • After allocating the components a message indicating success is displayed. The status of the work order will change to ALLOCATE and you are no longer able to make changes to the work order on the Work Order Entry/Query screen. If the work order is already in production, the status will remain PRODUCTION.

You may then continue with allocating another work order or exit the Allocate Components screen.Â
